The Blue Pike Urban Garden - 900 e.72nd Street Cleveland Oh - Market Hours 4-7:00pm Thursdays

I have wanted to shoot a documentary on organic farming for almost ten years now. The prospect of shooting one is abit daunting to say the least. I figured this summer I would find an urban garden and get my hands dirty after many years away from the soil.

I found Blue Pike farm via an article in the Cleveland Plain Dealer (May 16, 2007) by Roxanne Washington. Carl Skalak's amazing journey in developing an acre of industrial property in downtown Cleveland was awe inspiring. I had to check it out. Through his kindness I now have a small plot in the garden.

In highschool, I was more passionate about the environemnt. After attending The Mountain School I had a better understanding of the path our food takes and the process in general of organic farming. Having grown up in Cleveland (the city) I was fairly ignorant about agriculture in general. Working on the farm at the Mountain School I learned a great deal about planting, harvesting and planning out a large garden. It was an invaluable experience, one that changed my life completely at the time.

After graduating from AFI with my MFA in Cinematography, I thought I should get back into gardening and see if I could find the passion again to shoot a documentary.

Recently I saw the amazing documentary 'The Future Of Food' by Deborah Koons Garcia. This documentary has brought a new fire into my heart that will not cool. Understanding the impact that The Monsanto Corporation is having on agricultural practices is something everyone needs to know.

FIGHTING FOR THE FUTURE OF FOOD
Deborah Koons Garcia's film documents how genetically engineered foods slipped into our supply

"Just about everybody is pretty serious about their chow," says Deborah Koons Garcia, enjoying the understatement. "Even if they don't eat good food, they're serious about their junk food."

My most current work in this field is having directed and co-produced a television pilot called 'Journey To Your Plate' with SliceTV personality Jackqueline 'Jack' Horigan.

Jack has also been involved with The Food Network's 'How To Boil Water' (fyi). It felt great shooting in the hugemongious Limoneira lemon orchards in Santa Barbara and then showing the path the lemons take from the tree to our table. The farm isn't specifically organic but we leaned alot about integrated pest management and how mulching has helped on a large scale production. Being involved with this show has brought me closer to this field of work for sure.
